Dermabrasion in the Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs Area

Dermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure performed to enhance the texture of the skin and improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and scars from injury or trauma. The procedure uses a rotating brush or burr (diamond wheel with rough edges) to remove the upper layers of the skin and stimulate the formation of new skin cells. Dermabrasion is offered to residents of Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs, CA, by a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Sofonio.

Dermabrasion Procedure

First, a consultation is completed to assess the skin and determine the appropriate speed and amount of pressure to be applied by the rotating brush or burr. Local anesthesia is usually enough for small areas of the skin, but general anesthesia may be necessary for larger treatment areas. To increase the firmness of the skin, ice packs are applied for about 30 minutes, but for deeper abrasions, a cryogenic spray is sometimes used to freeze the skin. When the desired firmness is achieved, the rotating brush is placed over the skin to start the removal of the top layers. After the procedure, the area is covered with topical medications and a clean dressing.

Dermabrasion Post-Treatment Care

Patients are strongly advised to follow the wound care instructions given by Dr. Sofonio to prevent the development of skin infections and to achieve optimum results. The wound must be cleansed, and ointment applied several times a day to promote healing and prevent the growth of bacteria.

Patients must avoid sun exposure as new skin is easily damaged by the sun’s rays. The size and type of the treated area determine the speed of recovery but generally, skin regrowth can occur within one week. This gives the skin a pinkish or reddish color, which gradually will disappear within six to 12 weeks.

Dermabrasion Results

Follow-up visits are necessary to monitor the skin’s healing process and to detect and treat infections if any should occur.
